WHAT'S A GREEN POOL AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

A “green pool” refers to a pool or spa where the water has become discolored and appears green due to the presence of pool algae or other contaminants.

Pool algae growth

The most common cause of a green pool is algae growth. Algae thrives in water with an imbalance in chemicals, particularly low chlorine levels.

Insufficient pool chlorine

If chlorine hasn't been regularly added to the pool, or if the pool has experienced heavy usage, there may be insufficient chlorine to effectively prevent pool algae.

Pool pH imbalance

Improper pH balance can hinder the effectiveness of chlorine in treating a green pool. When your pool pH level is not properly balanced, the chlorine may not be able to do its job effectively.

Environmental contaminants

Rust, leaves, pollen, or other environmental contaminants can sometimes cause green pool water, though it's less common than algae growth.

This is a good example of why you can’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to your pool’s regular chlorine treatment.
